Willows, the alter ego of Geneviève Toupin, was born in 2014. Like the willow tree from which it takes its name, the project is rooted in memory while stretching its branches toward the light, blending delicate folk textures, acoustic instrumentation, and layered vocal harmonies that resonate in both French and English. The album Willows (2014) and the EP The Hills (2021) stand as evocative milestones of this artistic journey.
With over one hundred performances across Canada and Europe, she received the 2025 Trille Or Award for Best Folk Album. She has also earned several nominations, including at the GAMIQ (Folk Album of the Year for Willows, Folk EP of the Year for The Hills) and the Canadian Folk Music Awards (Indigenous Songwriter of the Year, Francophone Songwriter of the Year).
An accomplished musician and vocalist, she has performed as a founding member of the experimental folk group CHANCES, as part of the house band for the musical variety show La guerre des fans on Noovo, in the production Danse Lhasa Danse, and with Jorane’s ensemble Hemenetset. She also co-composed the score for the National Film Board of Canada documentary Sans maman, directed by Marie-France Guerrette.
Her most recent album, Maison vent (March 2023), draws strength from ancestral roots and the breath of the land. The record pays tribute to the women in her life—those who came before her—as well as to her own experience as a Franco-Métis woman from the Red River region, now based in Montréal. Deeply connected to territory and ancestry, Maison ventincorporates Michif-French—an inherited and reclaimed language—as a living thread weaving together memory, identity, and creation. Her music becomes a space of connection and freedom, suspended between rootedness and flight.
