Biographie

Argentinian cellist Juan Sebastián Delgado completed a Doctorate in Performance at McGill University under the guidance of Matt Haimovitz, focusing on contemporary music and Nuevo Tango. His artistic research has been featured nationally on CBC Radio’s Ideas, and he appeared as the featured cellist in the episode Virtuoso Brain of the television program Découverte.

First Prize winner at the Latin American Cello Festival (2008), Juan Sebastián is deeply committed to the creation and dissemination of new works that explore the cello in innovative ways. He has led artistic projects in 28 countries, including the premieres of three cello concertos written specifically for him:

  • Pájaro contra el borde de la noche for solo cello, ensemble, and electronics by Luis Naón (Paris Conservatory), commissioned by Radio France

  • Cinco Tangos Apócrifos for cello and string ensemble by Jorge Bosso (2016)

  • The Night of a Capricious Dawn for cello and orchestra by Jason Noble (2022)

Invited to the 2017 Creative Dialogues in Finland, he collaborated with renowned composer Kaija Saariaho and premiered works for strings and electronics in Helsinki. At the 2018 Lyon Biennale, he presented the world premiere of Daniel’s Tango for cello and marimba by Marcelo Nisinman. In September 2019, he was invited by the Albanian government to perform with pianist Redi Llupa at the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Tirana, where he premiered new works for cello and piano by Albanian composers Simaku and Tole.

He has recorded lesser-known works for solo cello, including Puneña No. 2, Alberto Ginastera’s tour de force, praised by Alcides Lanza (a student of Ginastera) as a “brilliant interpretation.” He also recorded Synchronism No. 3 for cello and electronics by Pulitzer Prize winner Mario Davidovsky for the 20th anniversary of CIRMMT.

He has recently appeared as a soloist with Ensemble Obiora (Montréal), the UMBC Chamber Orchestra (Baltimore), and the Mendoza Baroque Orchestra (Argentina).
